Diante River

The Diante has its origins in the Eranite Mountains somewhere in the far north. It is a large river by the time it flows past Valdere. It is roughly a half-mile wide at this point and flows a bit faster than a reasonable walking pace. It is navigable by boats both up- and down-river from Valdere but there are no settlements of note beyond the farming outskirts of Valdere and so it is unusual to see boat traffic to the north. As the river passes south it meanders through a 100-year floodplain miles wide and eventually widens into a marshy delta for many miles above its mouth at Thratis on the Blood Sea. For the entire navigable length of the river it is a dirty, silty flow which is not potable without boiling.

During the spring and summer seasons the river sees large amounts of boat traffic between Valdere and Thratis. These vessels, primarily merchants, range from small scows using oars or poles in the shallows to multi-masted barges and shallow-draft boats up to 250’ in length. Particularly wealthy merchants employ magical assistance to make runs in early spring and into the fall when weather would otherwise make travel on the river too difficult.
